The vaccination operation at Newbury Racecoursehas been a community triumph. The sight of our most famous sporting landmark & GP surgeries from across the constituency collaborating to vaccinate so many of our most vulnerable residents in less than a month has been as moving as it is magnificent.
I want to take a moment to pay a huge thanks to all those doctors, nurses and volunteers who have made it such an efficient and effective process
I also want to thankNadhim Zahawi- the Vaccines Minister - with whom I spoke today and throughout January when West Berkshire was slow to get started and many of you were anxious. He’s a big part of the reason we saw vaccine supply more or less triple, week-on-week throughout January.
Here is the latest data:
- Nationally the U.K. has vaccinated just shy of 11 million people. When you consider that the first needle went into Margaret Keenan’s arm 8 weeks and 3 days ago, that is an extraordinary achievement.
- Here in West Berkshire we have completed care homes and care home staff, frontline health and social care workers.
- Everyone over the age of 80 has been offered a vaccine and take up has been very high (well over 90% overall) A few people were not able to take it because they were unwell and they will have the vaccine at a later date
- West Berkshire is making very good progress through the age 75-79 cohort.
- Overall we remain on track to meet the Government target of offering the vaccine to everyone in the top four priority groups by 15 February.
