Laura met the Foreign Secretary, Lord Cameron, to discuss the situation in Gaza on Monday. The former Prime Minister was appointed as Foreign Secretary on 13 November, approximately six weeks after the terrorist attacks launched by Hamas on 7 October.
Laura said:
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is critical. I went to see the Foreign Secretary to impress upon him the imperative for humanitarian aid in the first instance, but that swiftly focuses on a permanent political settlement in the region.
I understand of course the depth of feeling and the horror of the 7 October events, but however remote it appears, a two-state solution is the only one that can eventually bring security to Israel and autonomy to the Palestinian people. I believe that this can be achieved – it almost was once before under the Oslo Accords – with the intense involvement and support of partner states in the region and beyond.
The Foreign Secretary I know shares my ambition to find a political solution and is thinking deeply about how this could be achieved despite the enormous obstacles that currently exist. We discussed Northern Ireland and the lessons that can be drawn.”
