Laura, who was a Member of the Justice Select Committee, joined Channel 4 on Monday to discuss prison capacity following the Lord Chancellor's statement to the House.
In his statement, the Lord Chancellor announced that the Government will legislate that there should be a presumption against prison sentences of less than 12 months. Laura highlighted that short-term sentences for nonviolent prisoners often lead to high rates of reoffending, and instead the use of smart sentencing outlined by the Lord Chancellor is the right approach.
