On Sky New's Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Laura was joined by Carole Gould, a campaigner on domestic homicide and the mother of murdered teenager Ellie Gould, to discuss the Government's recent announcements following the Clare Wade KC Review into domestic homicide sentencing, which included backing for Laura's campaign on sexually-motivated manslaughter.
Following the interview, Laura said:
"Earlier today I joined Sophy Ridge to talk about the Governments most recent announcement on domestic homicide sentencing and my campaign on sexually-motivated manslaughter.
"It was a privilege to appear with Carole Gould, mother of Ellie, who was murdered by her boyfriend when she was just 17. She has led an incredible campaign on better justice outcomes as part of the Killed Women project, launched last year.
"Clare Wade KC's report revealed so many significant factors which are specific to fatal domestic abuse and have not always been given sufficient weight by the courts. This includes the overwhelming frequency of a history of domestic abuse before the killing, the occurrence of “overkill” (as in Ellie’s case, where disproportionate force is used), and also sexually-motivated cases, framing the offence as “accidental” to secure a lower sentence.
"The Ministry of Justice has accepted the call for sentencing increases in each of these areas, before initiating a public consultation on other recommendations in Clare Wade's report this summer."
