Support for families

  1. Can my child go to school?

From Monday 23 March, schools closed to most children under 18. The only students accepted were the most vulnerable children and children of key workers (who would otherwise be forced to stay home).

Full details on key workers can be found here.

Following recent government announcements, and as soon as it is safe to do so, more year groups will go back to school in a phased way and schools should prepare to begin opening for more children from 1 June.

It is expected that children will be able to return to early years settings, and for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 to be back in school in smaller class sizes from this point. Secondary schools and further education colleges should also prepare to begin some face to face contact with Year 10 and 12 pupils who have key exams next year. The government’s ambition is for all primary school children to return to school before the summer for a month if feasible.

If your school is closed, your local authority will redirect you to a local school that your child or children can attend if they are eligible to do so because you are a key worker or they are vulnerable. To find your local authority contact details, please visit the link here.

A Department for Education helpline is available for parents, young people and staff to ask any questions about COVID-19 and education and children’s social care. Phone: 0800 046 8687.

  1. I do not have full custody of my child. Am I still able to spend time with them?

Yes. Children, under the age of 18, are still allowed to move between households as per court orders or custody arrangements.
