One of the provisions of the Environment Act was that water companies were given a legal obligation to set out the steps they have taken (and will take) to prevent sewage entering our rivers and waterways, and a new duty was put on them to publish information on the operation of storm overflows and water quality.
With the Environment Act 2021 now law, Laura has written to Thames Water to clarify the steps they are taking to improve water quality across West Berkshire and reduce the number of sewage spills from storm overflows. You can read Laura's letter to Thames Water below.
Over the summer, Laura will also be launching a campaign with Action on the River Kennet to hold Thames Water accountable and to ensure they are upholding their duties under the Environment Act.
