On Monday 21 March Parliament debated P&O Ferries appalling decision to sack 800 of its employees without consultation or notice the previous week. This was done in order to replace them with agency workers who will be paid less than £6.00 per hour which is below the National Minimum Wage.
During the speech, Laura addressed the legal implications (which the boss of P&O Peter Hepplethwaire more or less admitted to the Transport & Business Select committees later in the week) and her own proposals to deal with “fire and re-hire” - which is unrelated to the P&O proceedings but on which she has been working closely with Government to find a legal resolution.
