Housing

  1. If I cannot pay my mortgage, is there any support for me?

Yes. Lenders will offer a three-month mortgage payment holiday to people who are struggling to pay. You will need to discuss your individual circumstances with your mortgage lender directly. You should note that these payments will be added on to your balance.

  1. I am a renter, are there any protections for me?

Yes. Whilst tenants are still liable for rental payments and should pay if they can, if you find yourself unable to meet your rental commitments you should speak to your landlord. Landlords cannot give less than three months’ notice before any eviction which means that no one can be evicted during this crisis.

From 28 March 2020, the Government suspended all housing possession actions (evictions) during the COVID-19 crisis. This means that for people with cases already in the court system, or about to enter the court system, they are safe in their homes during this crisis.

  1. Can I still move house?

Yes. All buyers and renters will now be able to complete purchases and view properties in person, while estate agents, conveyancers and removals firms can return to work while following social distancing guidelines.

  1. I can’t pay my bills, is there any help?
