The Horse Racing industry is an important aspect of West Berkshire’s rural economy and culture and I understand that some in the industry may have concerns about the impact of the review of the Gambling Act. However, I want to reassure constituents that the proposals are intended to only protect those at risk or harm through proportionate affordability checks. Indeed, the proposals should not impact upon the majority of people that undertake the activity safely.
In addition, I recently visited Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows stables with the Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston where we discussed the Horse Racing industry, it’s recovery from the pandemic and the future. As such, I know that the Minister is aware of feeling within the industry.
The Sports Minister also recently spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on the Gambling Act during which he recognised the “close relationship between racing and betting” and the concern around affordability checks. He added that his Department is “carefully considering the impact” of the proposals.
