Like many of my constituents, I am determined to see a legislative framework which ensures that government policy puts our environment and sustainability first. This is why I am proud to be Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Environment and a member of the CEN, both of which are networks of MPs committed to enhancing environmental protections. Therefore, I am fully supporting the Government’s Environment Bill.
The Environment Bill will place ecology and sustainability at the heart of future policy making in this country by setting out the UK’s environmental commitments and holding future governments to account if it fails to uphold these duties. These will include our world-leading objective to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as well as legally binding targets on biodiversity, air quality, water quality and resource efficiency. Furthermore, the Bill will also establish the Office for Environmental Protection which will act as a robust regulator of this and future government action and take enforcement action as necessary.
In short, the Environment Bill gives the UK an unparalleled opportunity to continue to lead the world in ecological stewardship and environmental sustainability. It will also provide a strong legislative framework for governments and ministers to be effectively held to account and guide our future policy.
